How net pay works in Germany

German payroll deducts two things from your gross salary: wage tax (Lohnsteuer, plus solidarity surcharge and church tax if applicable) and social security for health, long-term care, pension and unemployment insurance. Together they usually take 35 to 45 % of a typical salary.

Tax classes

Your tax class (Steuerklasse) controls how much wage tax is withheld each month. Single people are in class I. Married couples choose between III/V and IV/IV. The tax class does not change your final annual tax, only the monthly withholding; the difference is settled with your tax return.

Church tax

If you are registered as a member of a church that levies tax, 8 % (Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg) or 9 % of your wage tax is added. You can avoid it by leaving the church at the registry office.

Health insurance

Public health insurance costs 14.6 % plus your insurer's extra rate, split half and half with your employer. Above €6,450 per month you may choose private insurance instead.
